Essay about Affirmative Action Should Not Be Continued

Affirmative action started in the 1960’s as a way to end discrimination against African American and later all minorities - including women. By migrating people of all color into workplaces and colleges/universities seemed to be the suitable solution to diversify our nation. Although blacks had been freed for a 100 years, they continually struggled with segregation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned the segregation of all sort in the United States, however that was not enough. Congress mandated the affirmative action program as a plan of desegregation. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy made reference to this plan, but it was not until September 1965 that it was enforced by President Lyndon Johnson. The program affected federal†¦show more content†¦On the other hand, some Caucasians (mostly males) suffer for the acts of their ancestors. Minorities have been compensated enough. It is time to stop dwelling on the past matters and move forward. Can a man not do what so ever he pleases with his own money? Well, Bill Gates did. In 1999, Gates give $1 billion for minority scholarships. He was praised for doing so by many, but is that not a form of discrimination? Irving and Kincaid were displeased with Gates actions, because they thought it was discriminatory and that the funds should have been allocated for the underprivileged. Gates, like many others, did not take into consideration that there are many disadvantaged whites who could have also benefitted from this. Insisting on how ridiculous minority scholarships are, Roger Williams University in Rhode Island decided to create a white-only scholarship. President Mattera had received thousands for this scholarship (Sargis, D.). The school did receive attack and some higher cut links with them. An act as such could be considered discrimination, so it seems fair to consider Bill Gates action and affirmative action reverse discrimination. Since affirmative action was first exercised, education and job opportunities have increased for minorities.
